NOTES:
I’ve always been a success junkie:
- Emerson’s Essays and other wisdom writing
- Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: Self-Actualized
- My father’s bookshelf with books by Zig Ziglar and other pop success trainers
- A home library packed with books on every topic I care about
But I haven’t always been on a traditional success journey.
WHY: Each of us has a unique definition of success.
- I have a friend who’s a young mother — she stays home with her kids while making money as an artisan.
- Remember my friend Candace Payne? You probably know her best as Chewbaka Mom. She’s never been traditional about anything. She’s an entrepreneur, speaker, and personality.
- But there are also the high-powered professionals who are climbing the corporate ladder. Success for them is a more impressive title and a bigger paycheck.
As different as each of these situations is, though, they all must go through the same 5 stages to reach success. They must all travel the Authority Journey™.

- Stage 1: X-Factor
- Stage 2: Craftsperson
- Stage 3: Expert
- Stage 4: Leader
- Stage 5: Legacy Leader
Every guru, thought leader, or celebrity has been on this journey. Even overnight successes — either they’ve had a lucky break and they’ll end up regressing to pick up skills they missed… or they were working behind the scenes, putting in their hours, before breaking into the limelight.
TRUTH:
- You must start at the beginning of the journey.
- You can’t successfully skip stages.
- You can stop at any point you want. (You don’t have to be a Legacy Leader.)
- This framework applies to EVERY industry, every area of expertise.
What it means is that success isn’t actually the target. Authority it.
So if you want to succeed:
- Map out the Authority Journey you’re on. What are the skills and experience you need for each stage of your journey?
- Figure out where you are right now on your Authority Journey.
- Now do the WORK of the stage your at. The work builds your SKILLS.
- Maintain the FOCUS of the stage you’re at. The focus builds your AUTHORITY.
- When opportunities come for you to level up and step into the next stage — take them.
- Discomfort or fear is normal
- Should be minimized because you’re ready
