If you’re feeling a little lost on your success journey, you may need to replace your massive to-do list with a mindset adjustment.
And for that, Lewis Howes could be your best resource. His book, The Greatness Mindset: Unlock the Power of Your Mind and Live Your Best Life Today, is a powerful guide for finding your purpose and changing your life.
About the Author
Lewis Howes is best known for his podcast, The School of Greatness podcast. But he’s also a New York Times best-selling author, keynote speaker, and member of the USA Men’s National Handball Team.
In 2011, he was recognized by the White House and President Obama as one of the top 100 entrepreneurs in the country under 30. He has been featured on Ellen, the Today Show, the New York Times, People, Forbes, Fast Company, ESPN, Entrepreneur, Sports Illustrated, and Men’s Health.
As impressive as these accomplishments are, none of them were part of Howes’ future plans. He was on track to build an impressive pro football career. That’s how he valued himself — until an injury stripped it all away.
For a while, Howes found refuge on his sister’s couch, trying to imagine life without football. It took a gentle push from her to finally get him to move on.
That day, the day he pulled himself up from her couch, was the day his journey to greatness truly began. And now, through his podcast, books, and speaking, Howes generously shares everything he’s learned along the way.
My Takeaways
This isn’t a book you can (or should) read quickly. Give yourself several weeks not just to read the book but also to soak up the lessons and do the exercises at the end of each chapter. There really is some magic in treating the book as a workbook and doing the work.
That said, The Greatness Mindset is one of the most positive books you will ever read. In the introduction Howes says, “You can rewrite the story of your past to propel you forward into a brighter future.”
It’s true. With the tools available in this book, you definitely can.
The Greatness Mindset is well organized and beautifully written. It begins with the foundation, your Meaningful Mission. It then covers the things that will hold you back — your fears and dream killers. Then begins the guided learning, which includes healing your past, finding your identity, and accepting and loving yourself.
One of the things I like about this book is that every lesson is backed by research. You’re not reading Howes’ opinions. You’re getting deep insights from experts in a wide range of fields. As a result, even if you’ve been on a long-time success journey, you will learn a few things that can focus or accelerate that journey.
I also like that The Greatness Mindset isn’t designed for one personality, age group, or type of person. The concepts Howes shares will work for anyone willing to put in the self-work of healing and growing.
For Howes, everything is built on your Meaningful Mission. So the beginning of the book is about helping you find that mission for yourself. From my perspective, this is where you should spend the majority of your reading time.
If you’re like me, you’ll learn a few things about yourself. As a success junkie, I thought I knew what motivated me, but when I did the exercises in chapters one and two, I uncovered my true mission — and it’s not what I expected.
Throughout the book, Howes shares four elements of the Greatness Mindset and a seven-step Game Plan for Greatness. It’s thorough. It’s comprehensive. And best of all, it’s completely do-able. The question is, do you want it?
If you’re ready to uplevel your life, The Greatness Mindset is your go-to resource. Get your copy today. Read it slowly. Soak it up, and do the exercises. It’s the best investment you could ever make in yourself.
